The Gradual during Lent reminds us to "Fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith." That is a pretty good summary of the entire thrust of Lent--indeed, the entire Christian life. Jesus not only saves us by His death and resurrection, but it is He that the Spirit delivers to us through Word and Sacrament to bring us faith and life. Unless the Lord would act, there would be no faith, and no salvation. Beginning with the OT Reading and the call of Abram (Genesis 12:1-9), and moving on to what Paul writes (Romans 4:1-8, 13-17), and then in the example we have with Nicodemus in the Holy Gospel (John 3:1-17) we have three readings that put before us the work of God to bring salvation to His people, then and now.
