In today's Holy Gospel, Jesus gives Peter and the rest of the twelve disciples, the sure and certain promise that He will build His Church on the confession that He is the Christ--the Son of the living God! Of course, the disciples themselves would not understand that certainty with which this promise was spoken, as they would abandon Jesus even as He carried out the work by which He accomplished their own redemption--and ours as well! And yet, it was them who were the foundation of the everlasting Church Jesus was building, and He himself was its chief cornerstone. Still today, we might doubt this sure and certain promise, looking for a Church to impress us, rather than a Church that is faithful. But Jesus' promise is certain, and so the Church shall stand!
